1st Base Runner builds and brooding yet intriguing 80s indie-goth atmosphere on the debut single, All Thoughts.
Austin TX-based electronic indie artist 1st Base Runner – aka Tim Husmann – really has a knack for building varied and interesting soundscapes. New single All Thoughts is taken from upcoming album Seven Years of Silence and really does a good job of introducing us to an intriguing style of electro-indie speckled with gothic drive and a penchant for crooning layers of self-analysis.
Coloured with the melancholy, the gothic, and the avant-garde, All Thoughts starts off with a simple electro drumbeat and deep bass before the track comes alive against soaring guitars and warping vocals. With a driving rhythm similar to band’s such as Interpol, the track delves into your unconscious as layers of cosmic synthesis and dreamy goth-pop build mercilessly.
It might feel dark and brooding, but that underlying element of pop which comes alive in the chorus and the steady drumbeat really unleash a wave of 80s indie nostalgia that’s hard not to enjoy. Husmann has played the avant-garde card well as it not only broods but unleashes a danceable energy that works well against the breathy vocals and downbeat lyrics: “Wake me up God ‘cause I can’t feel my legs and I’m falling down again.”
The track doesn’t outstay its welcome rolling in at two and a half minutes. This means it leaves you wanting more and intrigued by what else the artist is going to offer on this year’s album release around May. This not only allows the artist to build on the mystique of the sound but also build momentum with, hopefully, another single or two before the full package. All Thoughts does a great job of introducing us to 1st Base Runner and the interesting mixes of styles and ideas that come together nicely.
