New Music Fridays – 30th April 2021

April 30, 2021 by Jamie Parmenter

JEEN

It’s the end of April, people! Let’s welcome in a new month over the weekend the only way we know how: with lots of awesome music. This week we have four tracks for you to enjoy, from bluesy rock, to indie folk, to grungy fuzz. As always, click the pics for a listen.

JEEN – Better Drugs

JEEN

Toronto-based JEEN hits home hard on the grungy flow and crawling rock nature of Better Drugs. The track wonders why we are always searching for something more against fuzzy guitar riffs, settled yet interesting vocals and a hint of that ‘quiet grrrl’ sound that rises up in a blisteringly addictive and powerful chorus. JEEN is going places if she can create tracks this good on the upcoming album, Dog Bite.

Said The Whale – Everything She Touches Is Gold To Me

Said The Whale

Another Canadian band next in the delightful sounds of Said the Whale. The track is a love song about lead singer Tyler Bancroft’s first date with his partner of 11 years, highlighting all the excitement and anticipation through perfect turns of pace, interesting ebbs and flows, and a warm and inviting atmosphere. Reminding of bands like Polyphonic Spree at times, it’s just a pleasure to listen to and will put a smile on your face for its 3-minute running time.

Annie of the Canyon – Rosie, Rosie

Annie of the Canyon

Depicting an encounter with her lover’s ex-lover (awkward…), the folky blues flow of Annie of the Canyon’s Rosie, Rosie is a joy to listen to. That folky sound is blown away in the chorus with a more indie-pop vibe that suits the sultry vocals perfectly. The addition of warm piano and handclaps in the verses is inspired and really helps the track come out of its shell in a meaningful way. A fine example of a well-written song.

Boketto The Wolf – MAD

Boketto the Wolf

Formed in the city of Boston, Boketto Wolf knows how to sing the blues. New track MAD originally started with just a guitar riff that grew into the full blues-rock sound we have now, slowly building up to a big and bolshy chorus. The track always knows just how much to hold back or let go with fantastic build-ups featured throughout against some epic guitar work. The perfect track for the end of the week.
