New Music Fridays – 28th February 2020

February 28, 2020 by Jamie Parmenter

The Great Dictators

New Music Fridays is back with a vengeance this week, offering up another warm slice of new music to get your taste buds salivating. Soul and indie are the mainstays this week, with four tantalising tracks piquing our interest from four very different artists. To check out the tracks ‘click the pics’ and let us know what you think!

The Great Dictators – Play Dead Together

The Great Dictators = Play Dead Together

With The Great Dictators described by some as ‘slacker pop’, Play Dead Together encompasses the 90s indie sound of bands like Pixies or Sonic Youth, but channelled into a more settled and laid back atmosphere. Guitars saunter, drums gently creep and atmospheric synths sit behind a heavy bass. The vocals help tie this all together as they slide over the music, competent enough to make the music a mesmerizing whole.

Jordana – Crunch

Jordana - Crunch

How about some fuzzy, indie rock? Jordana’s Crunch is based around feeling an overbearing want for validation from someone and everything that comes with it. Its punk edge fits in well against the singer’s sweet but well-tailored vocals, resembling a mix between Kim Wilde and Charlotte Hatherley. Riding on a Strokes-esque solo guitar, the track batters and bruises it’s way to a strong conclusion.

Juán Tigre – The Dream Catcher

Juán Tigre - The Dream Catcher

The funky, psychedelic, indie sound of The Dream Catcher is musical candy to the ears. A whirlwind of ideas, changes, floaty vocals and fast-paced guitar work rattles forward, not allowing the listener a chance to get their bearings. As it spirals on, the instrumentation gets a chance to break down, jam and gradually fade out amongst synthy sounds that leave you wanting more. Quite the track.

Quinn Devlin & The Bridge Street Kings – California Wine

Quinn Devlin - Califonia Wine

Soul outfit Quinn Devlin & The Bridge Street Kings are a soul outfit with a mission: to provide settled but powerful tracks that really speak to the listener. They’ve accomplished this with track California Wine, as smooth and addictive rhythms perfectly pace the fine musicianship with the track giving everyone a chance to shine in the spotlight. Devlin’s vocals are the perfect accompaniment to the music on its settled but soulful journey.
