South London-based label Plum Cuts release inaugural single Remedies from Premium Leisure, with big plans for a vinyl future.
Founded by Oli Barton-Wood, this new up and coming label is definitely one to watch out for. With producing and writing credits and work on live sessions from the likes of Kojey Radical and Black Midi, Barton-Wood felt there was music he needed to get out there into the world, and so a label was the logical next step: “I realised I was sitting on all this great music that wasn’t going to find its way out there unless I did something about it. A few artists seemed reluctant to do the self-release thing because it can be daunting taking it all on, so I just thought ‘fuck it – why don’t I help them do it.’’
Not only that, but Plum Cuts definitely seems to see a big future in vinyl as part of their releases. The label plans to put out short runs of four tracks for each of their artists which will finish on a vinyl EP release, DIY music videos and homemade record sleeves.
Plum Cuts’ debut release arrives today (23rd September) in the shape of Premium Leisure and the single, Remedies. Premium Leisure is the solo project of songwriter and Willie J Healey guitarist, Chris Barker. Combining lounge-indie and the unrelenting groove of 1970s psych-pop, this is all wrapped in a pleasant indie-pop sound that can be experienced on Remedies. The four-track EP is slated for release at the beginning of 2021, so we can look forward to filling out vinyl boots then.
The idea of incorporating homemade record sleeves into vinyl releases seems to be popular at the moment. The Secret 7” exhibition which combines art and secret single releases is heading into its final event this year. You can find out more about this via our interview with co-creator Kevin King.
