Annamay: Out of Reach – Single Review

August 25, 2020 by Jamie Parmenter

Annamay

Annamay highlights her innermost feelings, longing to experience that strong connection once again on the honest and open single Out of Reach.

Annamay has come a long way since her debut album Fuck You released in 2019. At times the record was laced with anger, but now, Annamay appears to have vented most of her frustration in 2020, looking back on parts of her life with a sadness and regret on the single Out of Reach. Featuring a newly recruited band, Annamay aims to show the listener exactly what she’s feeling and what she plans to do about it.

Annamay - Out of Reach

A song about lost opportunities that may arise again, Out of Reach begins with gentle piano setting the scene before the full band slides in with drums leading the way forward. The way the piano continues to flit in and out with beautiful melody and structure almost becomes a second voice as Annamay pours her heart out, looking into the past to see if she can rectify the future: “Give me a chance to be human, don’t give up on us now.” It’s all very heartfelt and honest.

At times, the music can feel a little too structured which doesn’t work as well against the free flowing vocals. It just feels at times it really needs to come alive to match the longing and pain in Annamay’s lyrics. There is a decent guitar solo that helps fill this atmosphere out a little, but again, the rest of the instrumentation around it can feel a little empty.

Despite this, there’s no denying the passion and female empowerment that Annamay is striving for vocally and lyrically, and this helps to contain the track and move it forward.

Annamay is on the cusp of something with Out of Reach. She’s now found her voice, but just needs to combine this with the right atmosphere, musically, to really bring her onto the next exciting level.

Score: 3/5
