Welcome to the first New Music Fridays of 2022! We’ve got some right corkers to start the year off from synthy 80s vibes to 90s indie to tailored funky sounds. As always, click the pics for a listen.
Elephant Castle – Quicksand
With a wonderfully retro indie-pop sound that is subtle yet playful, Quicksand is pushed forward by a walking bassline and tight drums that combine against beautifully layered vocals. The bright and breezy chorus perfectly rises up before filtering back down to the more stripped-back verses. A great combination of beauty and songwriting.
Mako Bron – Unravel
Sydney-based singer-songwriter Mako Brown unveils a synthy, 80s inspired dream-pop sound in Unravel. With Duran Duran-esque guitars, U2-inspired melodies and a warm yet emotional atmosphere, the track saunters along with a verge and guile. The perfect pick me up after a long and hard day at work.
The Lovelines – Strange Kind of Love
Summoning quirky piano, playful bass and tight drums holding it all together, The Lovelines wrap this against perfectly tailored vocals and a delightful chorus that is crisp, harmonious and perfectly structured. It’s that kind of song you can’t help but smile to as it plays.
Palace – Shame on You
Steeped in reverb and heavy in emotion, the addictive indies flow of Palace’s Shame on You feels like it could have come straight out of the 90s. It has that wonderfully melancholic quality that builds towards a big chorus before bringing it back down again and tightening up for a strong finish. Great instrumentation and harmonies finish off the overall atmosphere well.
