New Music Fridays – 17th April 2020

April 17, 2020 by Jamie Parmenter

Raye Zaragoza

We have a very international New Music Fridays this week with four artists from four different countries, namely Sweden, Finland, the U.S and the U.K. Its also a very chilled out affair as we delve into settled beats, lo-fi sounds and dreamy folk to keep you lot stress-free in these troubled times. As always, click the pics to listen!

Raye Zaragoza – Fight Like A Girl

Raye Zaragoza - Fight Like A Girl

Written to shatter the idea of what a woman can and cannot do, Fight Like A Girl plays on the premise of female empowerment and how it can be inclusive of everyone. Amongst a country/folk sound, a strolling drumbeat moves the track forward as Zargoza’s powerful vocals and lyrics provide a focal point that ties everything together. It’s a beautiful piece of music with a chorus that will have you coming back again and again.

Deyeh – Opokosire

Deyeh - Opokosire

Poetic and humbling, the spoken word intro gives an insight into the artist’s world before kicking in with settled beats, echo-laden vocals and a raw, gripping atmosphere. With a nod to lo-fi hip-hop amongst tailored yet lethargic vocals, this builds into the track’s murky depths in a hypnotising way. Switching up to a more jazz, funk sound later on allows a focus back to Deyeh’s spoken-word style before it ends. This artist definitely has a future ahead of her.

Maramice – Painting Motions

Maramice - Painting Motions

Bringing with it a plethora of influences, Maramice’s Painting Motions kicks in with hip hop beats and loops before settling down into a slow-building warmth. The instrumental doesn’t need to do anything revolutionary, as it just sits in your mind and seeps into your veins. A good, strong lo-fi sound that doesn’t outstay its welcome and would set you up for a chilled night in.

Tove – Daisies Bloom

Tove - Daisies Bloom

With a dynamic and airy tempo, Daisies Bloom builds upon a wave of subtle guitar and layered, floaty vocals that create an air of calm throughout. Drums then enter the fray to tighten everything up and lead the track into its dreamy chorus. The chorus itself does enough without being overbearing and taking away from the subtle dreamscape sound, allowing the track to flow nicely and air out any bad energy. A real chill-tastic wonder.
