How are we halfway through January already?! Let’s celebrate 2 weeks of 2021 with some lovely new music, shall we? We have six tracks this week, each one bringing a unique style and flavour, from indie-rock to settled folk to lofi loveliness. As always, click the pics for a listen.
BLAB – Casual Sex
Multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter Frances Murray, aka BLAB, releases her sassy, indie-pop sound in new track Casual Sex. With a hint of 90s indie nostalgia, savage lyrics and wonderfully powerful vocals, the track subtly moves into a fuzzy chorus of guitar riffs and energy that you can’t help but enjoy. Seductively addictive and heavy on replay value, you’ll be listening to this over and over as you drink it all in. She’s gonna be big in 2021, mark my words.
Mo Kenney – Hard On You
Based on Daniel Romano’s version of Hard on You, Kenney’s lonesome and stripped back take captures an earthy, weary atmosphere built around acoustic guitar and her stunning vocals. Settled and unadorned, the track takes on an emotional life of its own capturing the exhaustion of dealing with human fallibility and protecting loved ones. It’s a beautiful track to listen to and you can’t help but get lost in its docile tones and imagery.
Carrie Baxter – Pray
Full of jazz and soul-drenched melodies, Carrie Baxter hits us with new track Pray. Hip-hop beats envelop a warm and welcoming sound that perfectly encapsulates Carrie’s smooth and sincere vocals, moving at a gentle pace against hints of lofi around the edges. It’s a mesmerising listen that you can’t help but get lost in, and you’ll feel a smile come across your face by the end.
Christian Leave – Your Life Your Time
Bouncy indie-pop is the name of the game on Christian Leave’s new track Your Life Your Time that flows forward amongst settled bass, playful guitar and a surf-pop flow. Relying on just a couple of instruments in the verses allows the melodies and energy of the song to be fully realised before being released in the catchy, bubbly chorus. A summer-tinged anthem before the summer has even started. Bring it on.
Max and the Martians – Please Hold On
Touted as a love song to everything we lose, Please Hold on from Max and the Martians delivers a feel-good, folky atmosphere steeped in a psyche-rock underbelly. With beautiful melodies and subtle harmonies, the track saunters forward on a sea of loveliness, gradually coming out of its shell and delivering something special in its conclusion. Max Bien Kahn’s vocals are the icing on the cake, smooth and interesting without ever taking over the song too much.
Juliet Garrett – Follow the River
Follow the River is the second single from Juliet’s forthcoming EP Make Believe and if this track is anything to go by, it’s going to be something to look forward to. Ethereal vocals sit over settled acoustic guitar as the track slowly moves onward amongst the gentle, heartfelt atmosphere being created. It’s hard not to be completely relaxed as the gentle rhythms unwind your body and soul, building towards a serene chorus. Sit back, relax and breathe it all in.
