Fleur East: Fearless – Album Review

March 24, 2020 by Laura Bevan

Fleur East

Fleur East has finally dropped her new, upbeat record. Fearless reminds all girls to remain strong and independent, especially after a break-up.

Fleur East is known for keeping it real which explains why her album is both vulnerable yet sassy at the same time. Easy to Love is an exciting way to kick start the album. With large brass parts adding colour to her track, Fleur showcases her talent by switching between song and rap. There is a big influence spreading throughout this album; Lucky, Size and There She Go represents this. The Flamenco style rhythms make the songs sexy without even trying.

This sass queen knows exactly what she wants with Mine as she tries to seduce her ex-lover by using physical pleasure to reignite the spark in their relationship and hopefully fix all their issues; “Fuck away all our problems” is an explicit yet powerful lyric that shows off Fleur’s desperate side. Yet, on the other hand, you are grabbed byWho You Are which is a song all about loving yourself and a complete contrast to Mine.

Fleur East - Fearless

Different sides of different personalities are portrayed within her songs. The beautiful piano ballad Things I should’ve said shows off her ability to express her vulnerability through the beautiful cracks in her voice. Her sadness is completely isolated and with the lyric “You forgot my birthday, I made excuses”, the listeners instantly feel moved by her story. The mood switches with Fame where her inner ‘Iggy’ comes out. The rapped verses are so different to any other song on the album which is an exciting change from the rest. As well as being able to rap, On and On showcases her incredible singing talents. With a large octave range and incredibly controlled riffs, you can truly hear Fleurs raw talent within these busy songs.

The journey of Fleur’s break-up is highlighted significantly in this album. Ending on a high note with Absence Speaks Louder Than Words, the darker tone exaggerates the realisation of where you stand with someone. If they wanted to be with you, they would have tried harder. A difficult situation to accept but something many should learn.

Score: 4/5
