Cassia: Powerlines – EP Review

January 25, 2021 by Laura Bevan

Cassia

Indie-pop band Cassia have taken time from their busy yet covid-affected touring schedule to create their new and personal EP, Powerlines. Empowering us with its natural feel-good impressions, the band’s charisma shines through and gives us something to smile about during lockdown.

Their single Do Right which caught the eye of BBC, is clearly a vibrant song from the get-go which produces an uplifting energy mirrored by the following tracks which soon reveal their signature stamp is to make listeners feel good. It’s clear that Cassia know how to create catchy choruses, groovy instrumentation and summer vibes as discussed in our recent interview with them, and this EP is about to show you just that.

The opening track Powerlines which holds the same title as the EP itself is an easygoing and relaxing track, incorporating groovy guitars to make you feel like you’re drinking beers with your friends in the sun. Whilst the song carries the same vibe throughout, the bass in the instrumental section stands out and makes you want to get up and dance with your loved ones.

Cassia - Powerlines EP

Drifting is instantly the funkiest track on this album, showing that Cassia truly know how to lift spirits and create music both fun and cheerful. The entire track radiates hope as lead vocalist Rob sings about not wanting distance to affect his life over lively instrumentation. It’s easy to get lost in the background of this song without truly appreciating Rob’s vocal capabilities. He ranges from his usual strong tone to a surprising change of falsetto and there is nothing short of angelic notes being reached. The breakdown section changes the vibe of the song as it becomes soothing and allows a great build-up to occur, stopping the track from the risk of repetitiveness, a great addition which was cleverly placed.

The last track Don’t Make A Scene is more relaxed and laid back, carrying a hugely catchy chorus. This is where you’ll find yourself singing along almost immediately. The synth in the background of the second verse as well as the backing vocals adds colour and brings it to life which is a clever yet subtle hack to use.

Cassia really know how to bring the energy to their music and it makes us excited for when they can eventually perform them. If you want something easy to listen to that will brighten your day then the Powerlines EP is definitely one for you.

Score: 4/5
